Castle day trips are the easiest way to see Europe's great fortresses when you are based in a big city. This guide compares the strongest tour from each of fourteen bases, from the classic castle day trip from Munich to castle days from London, Edinburgh, Dublin and Prague, and tells you which one we would book. For the full shortlist, see the castle tours in Europe.
Quick answer The best castle day trips, fast
The best castle day trip from Munich is a full day to Neuschwanstein with tickets included, from $85. From London the strongest value is the Stonehenge, Windsor and Bath coach day at $96.72. From Edinburgh the pick is the Loch Lomond and Stirling Castle day, and from Prague the two and a half hour castle walk with a local guide at $58 is hard to beat.
Key takeaways
- Munich, Germany: the Neuschwanstein and Linderhof full day trip covers both of Ludwig II's palaces in one day.

Germany: castle day trips from Munich and Frankfurt
Germany holds two of the easiest castle day trips in Europe. Munich has the fairy-tale palaces of Ludwig II, Frankfurt has the Rhine's ruined grandeur.
Munich: Neuschwanstein and Linderhof
Neuschwanstein is the 19th-century palace King Ludwig II of Bavaria built above the Pöllat gorge near Füssen, opened to the public shortly after his death in 1886. More than 61 million people have visited since, and as many as 6,000 a day arrive in summer. Entry is only by a guided or audio-guided tour of about 30 minutes with timed tickets, and the official advice is to reach the village of Hohenschwangau 1.5 to 2 hours before your entry time.
That is exactly why a tour makes sense here. Our pick is the Neuschwanstein and Linderhof day trip at from $85, which covers both of Ludwig's palaces in one 10 to 10.5 hour day. Book the option with entry tickets, because summer slots sell out and the itinerary is built around a fixed entry time. If you would rather travel by train and see only Neuschwanstein, the Radius Tours full day trip at from $89 includes lunch but not the castle ticket, which costs about €24 paid on the morning.
Full opening and ticket detail is on our Neuschwanstein Castle page, and for other fortresses in the country see castles in Germany.
| Tour | Price | Length | Entry |
|---|---|---|---|
| Neuschwanstein and Linderhof full day | from $85 | 10 - 10.5 hours | On the option that includes tickets |
| Neuschwanstein full day by train | from $89 | 10 hours | Optional, about €24 on the morning |
Austria from Munich: the Salzburg rail day
Munich's second castle day is really a city day with a fortress on top. It works because the train does the driving.
Munich to Salzburg by rail
Salzburg sits below Hohensalzburg Fortress, one of the largest fully preserved castles in Europe, open 365 days a year. The Salzburg day trip from Munich by rail at from $90.20 gets you there and back in about 10 hours with a guided walk of the old town. The fortress entry is not included, so you buy the funicular ticket yourself once you are there. Bring a passport, since the train crosses into Austria and border checks happen.
Choose this over a second Neuschwanstein day when you want variety rather than another palace interior. The fortress's own all-inclusive ticket with funicular is $21.50 (€19.20) for adults. If you want to plan the fortress visit properly, our Hohensalzburg Fortress guide lists the ticket tiers and the funicular maintenance closures.
Frankfurt: Heidelberg in half a day
Frankfurt's castle day trip is the shortest here. It suits travellers with an afternoon to spare.
Heidelberg, castle and old town
Heidelberg Castle is a red sandstone ruin above the Neckar river, famous for the Heidelberg Tun, one of the largest wine barrels ever made. The courtyard and Great Tun open 09:00 to 18:00 in the main season, and the palace ticket includes the funicular railway and the German Apothecary Museum.
Two operators run nearly the same half day from Frankfurt. The ETS Touristik guided tour at from $145 includes the castle and Great Tun admission and gets you back by mid-afternoon. The Fux Fahrservice van tour at from $142.72 covers the same ground with hotel pickup available for €50 per person extra. Pick the van if door-to-door matters, pick the coach if price does. If you have a full day, Eltz Castle in the Moselle valley is also reachable from Frankfurt on a longer, pricier trip, and our Eltz Castle guide has the season dates, with the castle closed all winter.
Scotland: castle day trips from Edinburgh and Inverness
Scotland gives you the widest choice of castle day trips here. Edinburgh and Inverness between them cover Stirling, Urquhart and Eilean Donan.
Edinburgh: start in the city, then Stirling
Do not overlook the castle on your doorstep. Edinburgh Castle holds the Honours of Scotland and needs at least two hours by official advice, and tickets sell out far in advance in summer. Once you have done it, Stirling is the classic day out. Stirling Castle was crowned home of Scottish kings, including Mary Queen of Scots in 1542, and survived eight sieges.
The Loch Lomond, Stirling Castle and Kelpies tour at from $76 is our pick: nine hours with a driver-guide, the Kelpies horse-head sculptures and the loch shore added. Stirling Castle entry is optional, so check your option. Children under 4 cannot join. The castle's own adult online ticket is $24.70 (£18.50) if you buy it at the gate separately, and the route from gate to palace is 160 metres on cobbles.
If Loch Ness calls instead, the Loch Ness, Glencoe and Highlands tour at from $91 runs 12.5 hours and can include Urquhart Castle, the ruin on Loch Ness blown up by government troops after the Jacobite risings. Book the option with the cruise and castle ticket if Urquhart is the point. For more, see castles in Scotland.
| Edinburgh day | Price | Length | Castle entry |
|---|---|---|---|
| Stirling, Kelpies and Loch Lomond | from $76 | 9 hours | Optional |
| Loch Ness, Glencoe and Highlands | from $91 | 12.5 hours | Urquhart ticket and cruise optional |
Inverness: Eilean Donan and Skye
Eilean Donan stands where three sea lochs meet on the road to Skye, and it is the most photographed castle in the country. From Inverness the drive is long, so the day runs 12 hours, much of it on the road. The Timberbush Skye and Eilean Donan day trip at from $92 travels down Loch Ness with a driver-guide, and the castle entry is an optional extra. Children under 4 cannot join.
The castle opens roughly 10:00 to 16:00 in shoulder months and up to 09:00 to 18:00 in summer, closed the whole of January, so a spring or autumn trip means checking the month. Adult entry is $17.38 (£13). Our Eilean Donan Castle guide has the full hour-by-hour breakdown.
England: castle day trips from London
London is the richest base here, with four different castle directions. Windsor is nearest, Kent and Warwick are the full days.
Windsor: the half day that needs no coach
Windsor Castle is the longest-occupied palace in Europe, begun by William the Conqueror after 1066, about an hour from London. You can do it without a tour at all: the official admission ticket at from $43 includes the multimedia guide and St George's Chapel and converts into a free 1-Year Pass. Note the castle closes Tuesday and Wednesday, and St George's Chapel is closed to visitors on Sundays. Plan 1.5 to 2 hours, and check closure dates because a working royal palace can shut rooms at short notice.
Full practical detail is on our Windsor Castle page, and our castles in England hub covers the rest of the country.
Three ways to combine a castle with a full day out
If you want a coach day, three tours cover the map. Stonehenge, Windsor Castle and Bath at from $96.72 packs three sights into 11 hours, departing Victoria Coach Station at 08:00 with a 07:30 check-in. Entries are only on the option that includes them, so pick that option or you pay at each stop.
To the north, the Oxford, Stratford, Cotswolds and Warwick Castle day at from $107.47 adds Warwick Castle, a fortress turned live-show attraction with birds of prey and a trebuchet in season. Lunch is not included and the Cotswolds are a drive-through. To the south-east, the Leeds Castle, Cliffs of Dover and Canterbury day at from $142.84 includes Leeds Castle entry, a castle set on an island in a lake in Kent about 1.5 hours from London by coach. Its tickets are valid for 12 months if you want to return.
Our comparison: pick Windsor plus Stonehenge and Bath for first-timers, Warwick for families who want shows, Leeds for gardens and coast.
| London day trip | Price | Length | Castle entry |
|---|---|---|---|
| Windsor ticket only | from $43 | Flexible | Included |
| Windsor, Stonehenge and Bath | from $96.72 | 11 hours | On the inclusive option |
| Warwick and the Cotswolds | from $107.47 | 10.5 hours | On the inclusive option |
| Leeds Castle, Dover and Canterbury | from $142.84 | 10 hours | Leeds Castle included |
Ireland: castle day trips from Dublin
Dublin offers two very different days: a three-castle epic to Cork, or a budget run through the Wicklow Mountains to Kilkenny.
Blarney, Cashel and Cahir in one long day
The Blarney Castle, Rock of Cashel and Cahir Castle tour at from $95 is the only castle day trip here where every admission is included. It runs 12 hours from the Molly Malone statue on Suffolk Street and is not suitable for wheelchair users. Blarney Castle was built nearly 600 years ago by Cormac MacCarthy and the Blarney Stone is kissed at the top of the keep, so bring the legs for the climb. The castle opens daily from 09:00 with no timed slots, which keeps the schedule simple.
The Rock of Cashel is the medieval ecclesiastical stronghold where the kings of Munster were based, and Cahir is one of Ireland's best-preserved castles. If you would rather keep it shorter and cheaper, the Wicklow Mountains, Glendalough and Kilkenny tour at from $50 runs nine hours and includes Kilkenny Castle entry, children under 3 excepted, lunch not included. Our Blarney Castle and castles in Ireland pages fill in the rest.
Czechia: castle day trips from Prague
Prague is the only base where the headline castle is inside the city. Beyond it, Karlštejn makes the classic day out.
Prague Castle, then Karlštejn
Prague Castle is a hilltop complex of St Vitus Cathedral, the Old Royal Palace, St George's Basilica and Golden Lane, and the buildings open 09:00 to 17:00 from April to October. The castle tour with a local guide and entry at from $58 takes 2.5 hours, includes the main circuit ticket and the tram up the hill, and meets at Malostranská. Wear decent shoes, it is cobbles the whole way.
For a full day, the Karlštejn Castle and caves tour at from $212 includes hotel pickup, a guided tour inside Karlštejn and the Koněprusy Caves. Karlštejn was founded in 1348 by Charles IV to guard the Imperial Regalia and the Bohemian crown jewels, and it sits about 30 kilometres south-west of Prague. It is the priciest tour here, so weigh it against the two and a half hour city option. Children under 5 and people with claustrophobia cannot join the caves. Our Prague Castle guide covers the ticket circuits in detail.
Four more bases: Bucharest, Lisbon, Geneva, Ljubljana and Paris
The remaining castle day trips trade distance for drama. Each pairs a castle with a second sight so the long drive pays for itself.
Bucharest and Lisbon: the two best-value days
The cheapest castle day trip here starts in Bucharest. The Dracula's Castle, Peles and Brasov day at from $44 runs 11 to 12 hours to Peleș Castle, Bran Castle and Brașov's old town. Bran Castle is the 14th-century fortress tied to the Dracula legend. The catch: castle entries are not included and you buy the Bran and Peleș tickets yourself during free time, so budget for them. Children under 7 cannot join. Our Bran Castle guide lists ticket prices and the late Monday opening.
From Lisbon, the Sintra, Pena, Regaleira, Cabo da Roca and Cascais day at from $49 is superb value for nine hours. Pena Palace is the candy-coloured romantic palace on Sintra's hilltop, and the guide sells Pena and Regaleira tickets on the option that includes them. It meets in front of Rossio station at 08:00. Full detail on our Sintra castles page.
Geneva, Ljubljana and Paris
From Geneva, the Montreux, Chaplin's World and Chillon Castle day at from $195 runs 9.5 to 10 hours along Lake Geneva through the Lavaux vineyards. Chillon Castle is the medieval fortress on the lake shore, and the tour includes Chaplin's World entry and a vineyard glass, though not the Chillon ticket itself. The steamboat cruise only runs June to September. Chillon's own adult entry is $18.20 (CHF 15), and our Chillon Castle page has the seasonal hours.
From Ljubljana the strongest pairing is the Postojna Cave and Predjama Castle tour at from $128, six hours with both entries included. Predjama is a Renaissance castle built into a cave mouth, and the cave under it opens only June to August. Bring a layer, the cave stays at about 10 degrees all year. Our Predjama Castle guide covers the shuttle from the cave. If you want Lake Bled too, the Slovenia in one day small-group tour at from $131.30 adds it, with about $96.27 of ticket extras paid on the day.
From Paris, the Loire Valley castles day trip with wine at from $117.60 is a 13-hour coach day to Chambord, the largest château of the Loire, and Chenonceau, built across the river Cher, with both entries included and a wine tasting. Guided visits inside the castles are not included and lunch is free time in Blois. Our castles in France hub compares every Loire option, and castle tours in Europe puts all fourteen bases side by side.

Guide hub Read the guideCastle day trips: questions travellers ask
Where is the best place to tour castles?
For variety within one base, Scotland is the strongest: Edinburgh alone reaches Stirling and Loch Ness, and Inverness reaches Eilean Donan. For the single most famous castle day trip, Munich to Neuschwanstein is the classic. Compare both in the city sections above.
What is the prettiest castle in the world?
Neuschwanstein is the usual answer, a 19th-century palace built above a gorge in the Bavarian Alps and the model for fairy-tale castles worldwide. More than 61 million people have visited it. See our Neuschwanstein guide for how to get inside.
Which castle is a must see in Scotland?
Edinburgh Castle, if you are in the city, because it holds the Honours of Scotland and crowns the Royal Mile. For a day trip, Stirling Castle pairs deep history with an easy coach ride from Edinburgh. Start with the Edinburgh Castle guide.
Do I need to book castle day trips in advance?
Yes for the castles with timed entry. Neuschwanstein summer slots sell out and Edinburgh Castle tickets often sell out far in advance, so pick a tour option that includes entry. Most tours here allow free cancellation up to 24 hours before the start.
Which castle day trip includes entry in the price?
The Dublin three-castle day includes all three admissions, the Frankfurt Heidelberg tour includes the castle and Great Tun, the Prague castle tour includes the main circuit, and the Paris Loire day includes Chambord and Chenonceau. Always check the option you select, because several tours make entry an optional extra.
What is the shortest castle day trip here?
The Prague Castle tour with a local guide runs about 2.5 hours and includes entry and the tram up the hill. Because the castle sits inside the city, no coach travel is needed. See the Prague section for the meeting point.
Can children join these tours?
Most accept children, with age floors on several: under 4 on the Edinburgh and Inverness coach days, under 5 on the Karlštejn caves tour, under 7 in Bucharest and under 3 in Wicklow. Windsor and Prague are the easiest with young children, since you set your own pace.
Is a castle day trip worth it if I only have one free day?
Yes, if you pick a tour that removes the friction. A guided day handles transport, timed entry and context you would otherwise research yourself. The best value pair here is the Windsor, Stonehenge and Bath day from London and the Blarney, Cashel and Cahir day from Dublin, both with decades of reviews behind them.
