What Chillon Castle is and why it is famous
Chillon is an island castle at the eastern end of Lake Geneva, and its fame rests on three things: Savoy history, one famous prisoner and one famous poem.
A castle built to control a road
The castle sits on a small, steep-sided oval limestone rock that advances into the lake between Montreux and Villeneuve. That rock guards the narrow shore passage between the Vaud Riviera and the valley of the Rhône, which was the quick route towards Italy. A garrison here could tax and control the road to the Great Saint Bernard Pass, which is why every power on the lake wanted it. The name itself is old: Castrum Quilonis is recorded from 1195, and according to the Swiss ethnologist Albert Samuel Gatschet it derives from a Waldensian dialect word meaning flat stone or platform, a castle built on a rock platform.
Chillon counts among the most visited medieval castles in Europe, and it is classified as Swiss Cultural Property of National Significance. It now belongs to the canton of Vaud. If you are touring widely, our guide to the best castles in Europe puts it alongside Edinburgh Castle and Prague Castle.
- Island position on Lake Geneva, between Montreux and Villeneuve
- Guarded the road towards the Great Saint Bernard Pass and Italy
- First named in records as Castrum Quilonis in 1195
The prisoner and the poem
The counts and dukes of Savoy used Chillon both as a summer residence and as a prison. Its most famous prisoner was François de Bonivard, a Genevois monk, prior of St Victor in Geneva and historian, who was held there for six years from 1530. In 1536 a Bernese army captured the castle and released all the prisoners, Bonivard among them.
That cell became the subject of Lord Byron's poem The Prison of Chillon, which turned the castle into a romantic landmark and drove the pilgrimage traffic of the 19th century. Visitors still ask for the Bonivard prison by name. Why is Chillon so famous, in one line: a fortress that controlled an Alpine road, a monk chained in its cellar and a poem that made both known across Europe.
What is inside Chillon Castle
The castle is a self-guided or audio-guided visit through roughly three levels of halls, chambers and cellars. Below is the natural walking order.
In walking order, from the gate to the lake
You enter through the courtyard, which gives the classic view of the donjon above and the lake walls below. The main rooms open off it in sequence: the great halls used by the counts and dukes of Savoy for residence and ceremony, the bedchamber with its painted beams, and the private chambers with medieval wall decorations and murals. The collections inside cover furniture, weapons and armour, and archaeological objects found on the site.
From the residential floors you descend into the part most people come for: the underground pillared hall and the prison cells cut into the rock, including the cell associated with Bonivard. You finish along the lake-side walls and towers, where the water laps the masonry and the view runs up the lake towards Montreux. The whole circuit works on a single ticket with either the audio guide or the 16-language brochure.
A practical comparison: unlike Windsor Castle or Hohensalzburg Fortress, no part of the standard Chillon visit requires a separate timed interior tour, so you set your own pace.
- Courtyard and views of the donjon
- Savoy great halls and the bedchamber with painted beams
- Wall paintings, furniture, weapons and armour collections
- Underground pillared hall and the Bonivard prison cells
- Lake-side walls and towers
Hours, dress and quiet times
Chillon opens daily through the year apart from two days, and the closing hour moves with the seasons.
Opening hours and when it is quiet
From April to September the castle opens 09:00 to 19:00 with last entry at 18:00. In March and October it opens 09:30 to 18:00, last entry 17:00. From November to February the hours are 10:00 to 17:00 with last entry at 16:00. The castle closes on 25 December and 1 January.
The quietest slot is the first hour after opening, our estimate, especially on a weekday outside the July and August peak. Midday in high summer draws the coach groups, our estimate again. A winter afternoon visit is also calm, and the low sun on the lake is a bonus for photos. Dress for cool cellars even in summer, since the underground halls hold the lake chill, and wear shoes that cope with stone stairs and worn floors.
| Season | Open | Last entry |
|---|---|---|
| April to September | 09:00-19:00 | 18:00 |
| March and October | 09:30-18:00 | 17:00 |
| November to February | 10:00-17:00 | 16:00 |
Getting to Chillon Castle
The castle stands right on the lakeshore at Avenue de Chillon 21 in Veytaux, minutes from Montreux.
From Montreux, from Geneva, by car
From Montreux the castle is a short walk or bus ride along the lake, which makes the town the natural base for a Montreux day trip that many travellers combine with the wider castle day trips network. If you start in Geneva, the simplest single booking is the Geneva day tour to Montreux, Chaplin's World and Chillon, which departs from Place Dorcière and runs 9.5 to 10 hours along the lake through the Lavaux vineyards. Its steamboat cruise element runs June to September only.
By car you follow the lakeside road between Montreux and Villeneuve to the castle's own parking area, arriving at Avenue de Chillon 21, 1820 Veytaux. By rail you reach Montreux station, a stop on the Simplon Railway and a mountain railway hub, then continue by bus or on foot. Both of the castle-only tickets here are sold at the castle itself: the audio guide ticket and the foundation's brochure ticket. Neither includes transport, so plan that leg yourself.
How much time to give Chillon
The castle repays about two hours. Three routings below fit different days.
Three routings
Our estimate for the full circuit with audio guide is 1.5 to 2 hours, close to the one-hour pace of the brochure ticket if you read fast. Add lake time. The promenade from Montreux along the water is half the pleasure, and the Belle Époque hotels of the Swiss Riviera sit on the same shore. If you want the castle plus the lake steamers, note the seasonal limit: the cruise element of the Geneva day runs only from June to September.
Here is how we would spend the time, by traveller type.
| Routing | Time | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Fast visit from Montreux with the audio guide ticket | About 1 hour at the castle, our estimate half a day with the lakeside walk | Short stays on the Swiss Riviera |
| Full castle morning, then Montreux old town and lakefront | 2 hours at the castle, our estimate a full day in Montreux | First-time visitors and photographers |
| Geneva day tour via Lavaux, Chaplin's World and Chillon | 9.5 to 10 hours door to door | Travellers without a car who want the lake in one booking |

Five things most visitors do not know
Small facts that change how you look at the castle.
The list
Chillon rewards a little background more than most castles. These five points come straight from the historical record, and each one changes what you look for inside.
- The name Chillon traces back to a Waldensian dialect word for a flat stone or platform, so Castrum Quilonis literally means the castle built on a rock platform (Swiss ethnologist Albert Samuel Gatschet, via Wikipedia).
- Master James of Saint George, the master mason who added Chillon's distinctive windows, is believed to have later built similar windows at Harlech Castle in Wales (Wikipedia).
- The castle controlled tolls as well as troops, since a garrison on the rock could tax the road to Italy (Wikipedia).
- The 19th-century restoration under Albert Naef marked replacement stones with inscriptions such as R for restored and RFS for restoration facsimile, and documented everything in plans, sketches and a journal until 1908 (Wikipedia).
- The German Emperor William II studied the Chillon restoration model when planning the reconstruction of the fortress of Haut-Koenigsbourg (Wikipedia).

What to pair with Chillon Castle
Three combinations that work, from an easy lakeside afternoon to a longer Swiss itinerary.
Montreux lakefront
The walk from Montreux along Lake Geneva is the classic approach to the castle, past Belle Époque hotels on the Swiss Riviera. Montreux station is a hub on the Simplon Railway, so the town is easy to reach and easy to base yourself in.
Short walk or bus along the lake, our estimate 30 to 45 minutes on foot Read the guideChaplin's World at Corsier-sur-Vevey
The museum at Charlie Chaplin's former estate is the other headline sight of the Riviera and is included in the Geneva day tour with Montreux and Chillon. Pairing it with the castle fills a full day without backtracking.

Why is Chillon Castle so famous?
Three reasons stack up. It guards the lakeshore road towards the Alpine passes, so Savoy, Bern and Vaud all fought to hold it. It held Chillon's most famous prisoner, the monk François de Bonivard, from 1530. And Lord Byron's poem about that imprisonment made the castle a 19th-century landmark. It is now among the most visited medieval castles in Europe.
Is it worth going inside Chillon Castle?
Yes, our view. The outside is photogenic, but the point of Chillon is the sequence inside: the Savoy halls, the painted bedchamber and the underground pillared prison cells. Entry tickets from $17.97 include either an audio guide or a 16-language brochure, and 1.5 to 2 hours is enough, our estimate. Book online in advance as the castle advises.
Who was imprisoned at Chillon Castle?
The best-known prisoner was François de Bonivard, a Genevois monk, prior of St Victor in Geneva and historian, held for six years from 1530. A Bernese army released him when it captured the castle in 1536. The counts and dukes of Savoy used the castle for other prisoners too, but Bonivard is the name attached to the cell.
What is inside Chillon Castle?
You walk the courtyard, the great halls and bedchamber of the Savoy counts, rooms with wall paintings and murals, and collections of furniture, weapons and armour and archaeological objects. The highlight is the underground pillared hall and the prison cells in the rock, then the lake-side walls and towers.
When was Chillon Castle built?
A square donjon was built on the island in the 11th century to control the road from Burgundy to the Great Saint Bernard Pass. The castle was greatly expanded in 1248 and again in 1266 to 1267 by Count Peter II. The name Castrum Quilonis appears in records from 1195, and the name itself is older still.
How do I get to Chillon Castle from Geneva?
The simplest single booking is the Geneva day tour to Montreux, Chaplin's World and Chillon, which departs from Place Dorcière in Geneva and runs 9.5 to 10 hours through the Lavaux vineyards. By public transport you take the train to Montreux, then walk or take a bus along the lake to the castle at Avenue de Chillon 21, Veytaux.
What are Chillon Castle's opening hours?
April to September 09:00 to 19:00 with last entry at 18:00, March and October 09:30 to 18:00 with last entry at 17:00, and November to February 10:00 to 17:00 with last entry at 16:00. The castle closes on 25 December and 1 January. Always confirm on the official website before you travel.
How does Chillon compare with other European castles?
It is one of the most visited medieval castles in Europe and, unlike Neuschwanstein Castle or Stirling Castle, it needs no timed interior tour, so you set your own pace. For more options on the water, our guides to Eilean Donan Castle and Leeds Castle cover the other great island and moated settings.
